Nuts and Bolts:
The Red Bull Soapbox Race rules won’t tolerate any funny business as far as propulsion is concerned; but in every other aspect, hijinks and shenanigans are not only allowed – they’re strongly encouraged. That’s why the team from The Village Theatre will be one to watch. Chris Clabo, Emily Dorroh, Justin Hall, Blair Holden, and Josh “Von” Warren are performers and instructors at the popular the Atlanta comedy club, and while their efforts usually result in hilarity, on August 29 they’ll be looking not just for laughs, but for speed.
“Our motivation for entering was another opportunity to collaborate and laugh together – not to mention building our most awesome prop ever!” says Justin Hall, spokesperson for this extroverted crew. He explains that The Village Theatre Racer (um, make that “Racre”) is based on the “Death Mobile” whose wacky run annihilated an entire city – and broke up audiences, as well – in the climax of the movie “Animal House.” The Atlanta comedians have never built a race car before. (“We did mention that we’re ACTORS, didn’t we?” Hall deadpans.) And they’re disappointed that they won’t be allowed to trip up their competitors with bags of marbles like in the movie. (“Everybody loves a pratfall,” shrugs Warren, the team’s driver.) But they’re confident of a great final act. Hall declares, “We wouldn’t enter if we didn’t think we could win.”
