Nuts and Bolts:

Caleb Horn doesn’t always drive the creations he makes for Red Bull events – sometimes he exhibits them. Caleb used 34 beverage cans to construct a dragster-shaped sculpture that was chosen for the collection on display at Red Bull Art of Can in Boston, and the aluminum airplane sculpture he created for Red Bull Art of Can in Minneapolis was awarded second place honors. So far, Caleb has participated in a total of five Red Bull events, including three art competitions, one dragster-style race, and a wacky flying contest. Now, finally, this road-racing fan and welder is getting the chance to compete the way nature intended: in a soapbox car of his own design. And he’s making it a family project.

Caleb’s pit crew of one consists of his wife, Kate Horn – also a veteran of Red Bull Art of Can. From all accounts, they’re a very practical couple. “We’re the oldest mid-twenty-year-olds out there,” Caleb attests with a smile. “And our soapbox car has been done for three years – except for the body. It’s being produced with the best materials I could find, including 6160 heat-treated aluminum and structural tube steel.” While Caleb finesses the structure of the car, Kate is contributing to their RV-themed skit, which will include the Dead Kennedys’ “Winnebago Warriors” as accompaniment. Lots of encouragement comes via Caleb’s nephew, Jared Berg – another frequent participant in Red Bull events. Jared was going to drive the Winnebago racer, but he had to scale back his commitment when he landed a job with NASA; so he’s providing moral support instead. Ever matter-of-fact, Caleb declares that he loves this race for one very simple reason: “I don’t have to deal with a drive train.”
