Nuts and Bolts:

“We’re usually level-headed people,” captain Chris Maniates assures us, “but cicadas have relentlessly attacked us for weeks. We pick them from our teeth after bike rides, ferret their carcasses out of our shirts while driving, shake them out of our shoes and dodge them on porches.” Though the cicadas has affected everyone in Cincy the Catch the Red Eye team seems unusually upset by the infestation. Chris has even begun to use the cicada as a unit of measurement. When describing her team, Chris makes the following notes: My height: 46 cicadas Debbie’s weight: 26,804 cicadas Shari’s laugh can be heard way farther than a cicada’s measly 440 yards Like the cicada, Shannan doesn’t leave the comfort of her home unless it’s at least 64 degrees outside Chris also claims (and we didn’t ask for the story behind this), “Sue can spit a cicada farther than she can spit a watermelon seed.” Unwilling to continue to live in the shadow of the incessant swarm, the team swears the following oath: “Now, it’s our time. Our racer will bend the cicadas to our will. We will ride our cicada to victory! REVENGE!”
The team will exact their retribution by dancing to a bugged version of “Baby Got Back” before zooming off in a cicada-shaped racer as the frenzied buzzes of “The Flight of the Bumblebee” fill the air.
