Nuts and Bolts:
Red Bull Soapbox brings together people of wildly different backgrounds, but you still don’t see too many NFL place-kickers working on racers. Even that started to change in August, when the Cincinnati Bengals’ Shayne Graham rolled up his sleeves and picked up a ratchet. With a team garage set up at the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Cincinnati Shayne, volunteers, youth and staff at Ronald McDonald House built the Golden Grahams team racer.
When team captain Hank Reed, who also manages Shayne, heard about Red Bull Soapbox Cincinnati 2008, he immediately “thought it would be a great opportunity for the Shayne Graham Foundation to provide a creative way to raise awareness of Shayne’s work in the community and get kids involved at the Ronald McDonald House.” Besides Hank, the team roster is wide open, pending a selection process by The Shayne Graham Foundation and Ronald McDonald House staff. The selected participants get a spot on the team and the chance to meet Shayne.
If Shayne’s standard of excellence wears off on the team, they’ll pose a legitimate threat to the competition. Shayne ranks as one of the most accurate NFL kickers of all time and his success has earned him the nickname Golden Graham. A world-class speed freak, Shayne recently took a ride in an F-16 fighter jet, and hopes to keep the barrel-rolling momentum going as he and the Golden Grahams team look toward October 4.
