The Bockster
Garage Headquarters: Cincinnati, OH
Driver: Matthew Andrews
Mechanics: Angie Strunc, Eileen Enabit, Jack Martin, Bryan Williams
Nuts and Bolts:
So, a goatman, a German and a monk walk into a bar. That’s the premise for the Bockster’s entry in Red Bull Soapbox Cincinnati 2008. Hilarity ensues when Carrie Nation shows up. Those of you who love the history of beer as much as the Bockster team will immediately recognize Ms. Nation, thanks to her trademark hatchet. But unlike the many pre-Prohibition era barkeeps who lost their beer reserves when teetotaler Carrie came in swinging her axe, the Bockster will keep Cincy’s libations safe and sound.
Captain Matthew Andrews describes the Bockster racer as “big wooden beer barrels that signify Cincinnati’s great German beer-making heritage.” When the beer becomes endangered, Matthew (the bockman) will hop onto the barrels and steer them to safety after getting a good push from our other heroes. As for Carrie (portrayed by Bryan), she’ll get her comeuppance when her dress hits a snag and rips away. The overall performance should come across with great authenticity; as Matthew helpfully points out, “this isn’t Bryan’s first time dressing up as a woman, and it won’t be his last.” Team mechanic and fellow beer enthusiast Jack Martin dreams of one day opening a microbrewery in Over-the-Rhine. On October 4, he’ll settle for sending Matthew on the ride of his life.
