Nuts and Bolts:
What’s unique about the CaddyShackers? They’re the only team at Red Bull Soapbox Race Denver that’s fielding a set of triplets! Andy, Justin, and Ryan Boshoven are 20-year-olds from Castle Rock, Colorado, and though they study at different universities (Andy is at Colorado State and Justin attends the University of Denver, while Ryan goes to Northern Colorado University), they couldn’t resist getting together to build a soapbox racer. They’re combining forces with two friends from their high school days – CSU students Cory Roberts (21) and Jared Sims (19) – to do so.
Besides a shared history, the five friends have in common a love for competition. “We’re all pretty smart, athletic, and laid-back,” notes Andy, the team’s captain. “If we can compete in something, we want to – and want to win.” He cites as examples that Cory was a professional snowboarder, while Jared turned his competitive spirit to scholastic ends in earning a perfect score on the math part of the ACT. Justin even seems to be a competitive enabler: he was involved in designing a game for Nintendo Wii. Ryan is a Division 1 golfer for Northern Colorado, and the rest of the teammates are avid golfers, too; which is, of course, why they chose a Caddy Shack theme for their entry. As Andy explains, “It’s a tribute to something we do almost every day.”
