NUTS AND BOLTS: “We may look old, but we’re a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” whispers Jim Keesling, captain of the Formula Track at Centennial team. “We have a passion for the fun things in life and are very competitive – we’re going to destroy the young bucks!” Jim, 47, and his elderly teammates John Bradley (53), Wright Hugus (46), Matt Geier (a fresh-faced 33), and David Zarlengo (50) are a conglomeration of friends, colleagues, and, most important where Soapbox is concerned, fellow kart racers. Ol’ Jim is owner of The Track at Centennial, Colorado’s premier karting facility, and Matt works there as well (when his back and knees don’t give out). The popular venue is located at Centennial Airport, where David, with the wisdom of his many years, is maintenance director. Wright, meanwhile, is a producer for the Altitude Sports and Entertainment network – he’s the visionary seer for the group. And even John, who certainly has one foot in the grave at his advanced age, brings something to the table: he owns the Sterling Service auto shop, and though he’s wizened, he’s still an expert with tools.
Like a magic talisman, the teammates carry with them the vitality of youth in the form of Wright’s daughter Morgan (9), and Jim’s kids Fowler (8) and Logan (6). “They’re awesome,” Wright declares. “And they make sure we take our naps.” Together the teammates are attempting to recreate the Red Bull Racing Formula One car using a highly modified go-kart platform. Whistling through his false teeth, Jim croaks, “We’re totally excited to be a part of this – can’t wait!”
