Lone Star Trainwreck
Garage Headquarters: San Marcos, TX
Driver: Jay Gordon
Mechanics: Evan Rider, Doug Didjit, Aaron James Leblanc
Nuts and Bolts:
Located between Austin and San Antonio, the city of San Marcos is at the gateway to the Texas Hill Country; and that, folks, is prime cowboy territory. Now few people know this, but if there’s anything a cowboy likes better than drivin’ cattle, it’s drivin’ a soapbox racer. You can take that to the bank. So imagine the downright giddiness that will be experienced by the San Marcos team called Lone Star Trainwreck when they thunder past the herd of contestants in a racer shaped like a bull – their two favorite drivin’ activities in one!
“We call him Ol’ Ribeye,” says a grizzled Jay “Papa Slow” Gordon, patting the flank of their massive bovine. His teammate Doug “Wheelie No-Deelie” Didjit points proudly to the creature’s hide, “And that there’s real leather!” Another member of the posse, Evan “Easy” Rider, adds with a knowing wink, “Under that skin, there’s plenty of muscles…for the ladies.” Papa Slow will also be under there somewhere, because he’s going to – now ain’t this appropriate? – steer. “I’ll be wearin’ my best boots,” Papa intones, indicating just how seriously the teammates are taking the competition. Aaron “Jesse” James Leblanc pops out from working on the disc brakes to acknowledge the moment. “I love them boots, Papa,” he murmurs appreciatively. “Love them boots.” Clearly, this is one team that realizes there’s a lot at steak.
