Nuts and Bolts:
TEAM NAME: Rock-n-Rollin Guitar Heroes
In 2004, when Sean Serell was a medical resident at the University of Washington, he led a team at Red Bull Flugtag Portland, an insane event at which he launched a human-powered flying machine over (and into) the Willamette River. In 2006, Sean found the Arizona Flugtag contest to be conveniently close to his new anesthesiology practice in Fort Collins and entered once again. Now two more years have passed. Sean still “passes gas for a living” in Colorado, and he has decided to give Denver’s Red Bull Soapbox Race a try. Joining him will be a lot of other Serells – Sean’s wife Tiffany and his brothers Jeff and Steve – plus his good friend Ian Bare, a family practice physician.
This time around, the teammates are going to rock out by putting a classic Les Paul on wheels. “The inspiration was my 4-year-old son’s (and my) love of Guitar Hero and the addictive nature of the game,” says Sean, who, like all the teammates, will be in character as a Guitar Hero avatar. “I’m really pumped I won’t have to find another Halloween costume, as I can go in my Slash outfit from the race – although I’m concerned people might mistake me for Howard Stern!” Sean may be self-effacing, but his competitors should take note: Those Flugtag contests Sean and his teammates entered in 2004 and 2006? They won them both.
