Nuts and Bolts:

“We are nuts and smart, a deadly combination,” warns Dave King, captain of a Red Bull Soapbox Race team called The Nosotro’s. “Our racer is going to cover all the bases: it’ll be fast, funny – and ethnically diverse!” With a King, two Archibalds (Jason and Pat), and a pair of Gallaghers (Lehman and Sean), these boys sound more Anglo than ethnic; but they’ll be channeling their inner Mexican with a Sombrero-shaped racer controlled by none other than the Jack Blackian movie hero Nacho Libre.

Based outside Denver in the city of Thornton, the 20-something teammates make their living in professions ranging from engineering, welding, and working on cars to processing accounts and promoting products. “Sssssoapbox is a gooood time to get together and build ssssome junk that is faaaast,” slurs Dave, who seems ever-so-slightly affected by the pungent adhesive he’s been using to create an enormous embellished hat on wheels. Jason, clearheaded after stepping out for some air, leads his addled teammate outside and contributes, “We’ll have mariachi music and piñatas, too.” Dave’s ears perk up, and he shakes off the fog to become a fierce competitor once more. “We’re got pure charisma and sex appeal, and who doesn’t love a sombrero?” he shouts rhetorically. “Do I think we will win? You bet your ass we will!”
