Nuts and Bolts:
"Our team competed in the 2006 Red Bull Soapbox Race, and members of our team have also competed in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Human Powered Vehicle Challenge," says Justin Williamson, captain of the 2007 soapbox team called The Good, The Bad, and The Nerdy. He adds, “We’ve also participated in our fair share of science fairs and quiz bowls.”
Williamson and his cohorts Anthony Johnson, Brett Moorman, and Charlie Murray are students at and alumni of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Their fifth teammate, Corey Carlson, brings seven years of bicycle racing expertise to the group. Since the subject of mathematics is near and dear to their engineering-oriented hearts, they built a wheeled calculator as their vehicle last year, and now they're producing an improved version, which they've nicknamed Numerator 2.0. "To ensure that we build the fastest calculator in the world, the Numerator 2.0 will be modeled and analyzed using the latest in 3-D modeling software," Williamson explains. "The vehicle will take shape in the Center of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing and Production – CAMP – a lab that allows more than 200 students to participate in international design competitions." With a grin, he finishes, “Remember folks, The Numerator is always on top!”
