Look out for the Zamroadies – they’re ready to ice the competition in Providence. And they’ll be using a Zamboni-shaped racer to do it.

As anyone who has ever attended a hockey game or a figure skating exhibition knows, one of the best parts of the show is intermission – when everybody suddenly forgets about running to the bathroom or getting popcorn and sits there transfixed by the sight of a motorized vehicle methodically mastering a slippery surface. Zamroadies captain Kristine “Rosie” DeRosa is a Zamboni driver for real, and she’s also a hockey player, as is Andrea Poley (a city planner when the pads are off). As for the men on the team – Rabi Fettig and Erick Peeke – DeRosa says that they “don’t know a one-timer from a two-line pass.” But they’re great guys, and smart to boot; Fettig is an engineer and Peeke is a chemist. The teammates get together regularly for Frisbee golf tournaments and scavenger hunts, even though they’re spread out across three states, and DeRosa is teaching them to trash talk like hockey pros. They’re building their racer in New Jersey, but when it comes to winning the hearts and minds of the crowd on October 13, the team has made a canny costume choice. They’ll be wearing hockey jerseys from Providence College.
