The Flying Toastmen
Garage Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
Driver: Buck Lucas
Mechanics: Dan Orsine, Chris Moritz, James Gonsalves, Ann Walker, Justin Eichman
Nuts and Bolts:
Toast. It’s not just for breakfast anymore. In fact, it’s not just for eating anymore – not if The Flying Toastmen have their way. Justin Eichman, Buck Lucas, Dan Orsine, James Gonsalves, Chris Moritz, and token toastwoman Ann Walker are so crazy about warm, crunchy carbs that they’ll race a veritable toastmobile down Dolores Street at the Red Bull Soapbox Race. If all goes well and they can muster enough speed, they’ll see to it that their opponents are toast, too.
Not that anybody in this team of professionals (consulting, medical sales, account management, business ownership, and – ouch – investment banking) cares about winning. “Our goal is second place,” says Buck. “We intend to DOMINATE… and take second.” As the team’s driver, he will hold the power to achieve that odd objective literally in his toasty little hands, and everyone’s pitching in to give him the best possible racer. The teammates have been spending their nights and weekends testing and tweaking the vehicle in an “undisclosed, private Bay Area wind tunnel”; and they assert that before work every day they arise extra early for an uphill run on foggy Dolores Street to build stamina, as well as familiarity with the racecourse. (Naturally, they refuel at Toast restaurant in the nearby Noe Valley neighborhood.) Buck proclaims, “We’re going to go fast, take chances, and, at worst, leave a good-looking corpse.”
