Alaska Flyers
Garage Headquarters: Federal Way, WA
Driver: Kristopher McCloskey
Mechanics: Anthony Johnson, Daniel Nye
Nuts and Bolts:
Move over, holiday parties. What’s the new way to meet people at work? Constructing soapbox cars, clearly. Team Alaska Airlines is made up of three airline industry professionals (guess which one they work for?) who had never met before hearing about the event. Kris McCloskey, a flight attendant, was working on flights where Anthony Johnson and Daniel Nye were passengers when they started talking about the race, and the rest is history. Coming from all different departments within Alaska – Johnson in Interior Engineering and Nye in Commercial and Regulatory Law - each member of the trio brings their own experience to the competition.
As an aspiring pilot, McCloskey will get to test his steering and maneuvering ability behind the wheel – that’s one thing he’s not concerned about. It’s the actual building process that may pose a challenge. The team plans to construct their craft out of a Boeing 737-800 metal substructure, solid rubber tires, and hard foam. How hard can it be? Of course, with the way this guy makes friends, there’s always the chance that an additional construction-skilled teammate is simply waiting in the wings of his next flight…but for now, get ready to watch these three fly down the road on September 29th.
